The mission of Orpacific University of Technology (Orpacific), incorporated in California, USA is to deliver practical, recognized, top quality tertiary education programs at an affordable price to students globally.
Orpacific is a new generation high-tech university. While it conducts most of its teaching and learning online, Orpacific is not an institution where technology dominates and determines the way things are done. Instead we develop the pedagogy that allows the most effective learning for our students. Technology is then developed to implement that pedagogy. We do not simple adapt existing Internet technology. We developed the tools from scratch to fit our purpose.
Why Orpacific University of Technology?
There are already many universities in the world, and therefore an important question is why the need for another university? Examining the landscape, one will find universities of all shapes and sizes, and offering programs with vastly different quality and cost. Disregarding universities set up primarily as degree mills, it is clear that any serious effort to offer decent education programs come with hefty prices and these prices are ever increasing. It is therefore no small wonder, where in the modern high-tech world; ever increasing sophisticated products have prices that resemble the motion path of a smooth shiny ball on a steep slippery slope, and why education cost is not following the trend.
Orpacific University of Technology is set up to challenge this illogical trend, with a view to providing programs rivaling the best in the world and yet at a fraction of their cost. Orpacific would not be able to accomplish this objective if it operates the university like any of those conventional universities. The first task of Orpacific is the establishment of the competencies that a student must achieve to excel in the face of all the challenges of his profession. The second task is to find new ways of helping students achieving those competencies at a reasonable cost.
Professional Training Requirements: Two factors govern the characteristics of a well-trained professional; good knowledge of the profession and the ability to apply the knowledge in practice.
One of the most efficient and effective way in transferring knowledge is mass lectures by an effective lecturer of the subject matter, together with personalized tutorials. Virtually all universities today use this method to deliver knowledge to the students. At Orpacific, we believe likewise, but we do things in a very different manner.
We deliver our lectures in our virtual classrooms, which for most practical purposes, are similar to lectures in physical classrooms. However from an effectiveness perspective, students can now re-listen to a lesson many times if it is difficult, or skip parts if he is already conversant with those parts. He can now ask questions as he goes along in the lesson, instead of queuing up to ask questions in a big class at the end of the class. A further advantage of the self pace lessons, digital interactive media can be intermeshed into the lecture to give a more varied and vibrant lesson than a physical based classroom. The value our technology brings is obvious. Students can now learn from the most qualified lecturer. To find a few good lecturers is manageable, but to find 100 similar ones to send to 100 locations in the world is a big challenge. The cost of our lectures is reduced. The time our tutors need to answer questions is also reduced as students’ questions will come well composed, and the tutor no longer has to wait around for a student to think about how to compose a question. All these lead to lower costs, without loss of quality, or in effect, an increase in learning effectiveness, and we pass the savings back to you.
Learning how to put knowledge into practice typically involves solving real life problems of the profession, or executing realistic projects with proper guidance. It is well known that project courses are expensive to mount as they involve individualized supervision. In fact many programs of even reputable universities totally do away with projects, or only in small doses, to save cost; a great disservice to the students and the profession. At Orpacific, we do not believe in cutting corners. All our courses are peppered with segments of problem-based learning. All of degree-level programs also come with a major project that takes a student through the major milestones of the intended profession. Increased cost is inevitable, but we mitigate it by performing all interactions online, so that one mentor can effectively supervise more groups of students.
Orpacific adopts an evidence-based approach to assessments. It is meaningless to talk of a great program, but adopts a doggy assessment standard. We develop a most effective virtual presentation/demonstration room, which allows student to record easily the process of their project, and organized them into multimedia portfolio. Discussions are performed in our state-of-the-art virtual conference room, and archived as evidence of the process in the project execution. Our assessor assesses the multimedia portfolio, giving generous comments on how you have done and how the project can be better executed.
A highlight of the Orpacific program is a collection of the portfolio in each of the modules and the graduation projection into a Personal Graduation Digital Portfolio (PGDP) DVD. This DVD serves as evidence of the competence that Orpacific students have achieved in their program. No employer anywhere in the world can now doubt the competence of our students in their profession.
How does Orpacific operate?
Set the standard. We fixed the goal, as dictated by the profession. We establish and publish Competency Standards, so that students, teachers and employers know where we are heading in our training program. We clearly state the performance criteria to achieve before we will certify a student competent in a module. All our Competency Standards are public documents, available from our web portal and in the PGDP DVD of our graduates. We are completely transparent. We do not believe in giving you a vague title with only a few lines of description.
We deliver knowledge in virtual classrooms, combining the best of traditional teaching and modern digital interactive learning. We will put sample lessons of each module in each PGDP DVD so that prospective employers of our graduate will know exactly what our graduate had been taught. We are not a "flip the pages" online learning provider.
We record the complete process of each student (close up) taking written examinations in our virtual examination rooms in full multimedia. We include all multimedia recordings in the graduate's PGDP DVD, so that his prospective employer can believe that he had learned the knowledge we teach, and had pass exams with complete transparency.
We foster application of knowledge in practice through problem based learning and a major real life graduation project, and the entire process is recorded in our virtual multimedia presentation rooms.
We provide evidence of our graduates' competence in their profession in a Personal Graduation Digital Portfolio DVD.
Orpacific's Accreditation
We have full respect for reputable accreditation agencies. However we also believe that reviewing a stack of documents, plus a 2-day visit is not sufficient for any accreditation agency to comment very much beyond in a very superficial manner the quality of a program, and virtually impossible for a particular graduate of the institution.
